Join us for an Earth Day Celebration where you can roll up your sleeves and make a difference! You can build a rain
barrel, learn about home composting, work on our trails, help prepare our gardens for spring, assist with planting a tree, in recognition of Arbor Day, and meet a local author. In addition, in honor of our 1 Camera, 2 Hours Exhibit, bring us your plastic shopping bags*! We are creating an outdoor community exhibit and want you to be part of our creative conservation piece.
The day’s activities are free and open to all! See website to pre-purchase a rain barrel and/or home composter.
Note: Rain Barrels and Earth Machines should be ordered in advance on our website as they are in limited supply—they will be sold on a first come, first served basis. These programs are presented in partnership with Coca Cola, Groundwork Hudson Valley, and Town of Greenburgh.
Schedule of Events and Activities at the GNC:
11AM: Rain Barrel Workshop – Groundwork Hudson Valley, Coca-Cola and the GNC are teaming up to teach you how to re-purpose a Coca-Cola syrup canister to capture fresh rainwater for use on your own property. Coca-Cola is donating syrup drums for reuse as rain barrels. By capturing rainwater and using it to water plants and lawns or washing cars, rain barrels encourage water conservation. Storing rainwater in rain barrels also protects rivers and streams and reduces flooding. Each rain barrel replenishes an estimated 1,300 gallons of water back to nature each year.
Rain barrels can be purchased for $40 and taken home. Supply is limited—Reserve your barrel in advance by visiting our website or by calling 914-813-1251. Proceeds benefit the Greenburgh Nature Center and Groundwork Hudson Valley's Saw Mill River Coalition.
12–3PM: Trail Sweeping and Garden Sprucing – Help us give the GNC trails and property a good Spring Spruce-Up! Bring your work gloves and clothes that can get dirty.
1PM: Home Composting Class – Learn how you can use your kitchen scraps along with your yard waste to make valuable compost for your gardens.
Earth Machine backyard composters are available for purchase for $75, and can be ordered and picked up in advance. Supply is limited—Reserve your composter in advance by visiting our website or by calling 914-813-1251.
2PM: This Book Was A Tree - New Book Release! – This new book is a project-driven self-help book on how to slow down and reconnect with the natural world. Get your copy signed and enjoy a fun, interactive planting activity from the book led by local author Marcie Chambers Cuff. Books will be available for purchase and signing.
3PM: Tree Planting – Dig in and help us give a tree a good start on the GNC property! The Town of Greenburgh is joining us to celebrate Arbor Day at the Nature Center. The portion of the program begins with the reading of the Town’s Arbor Day Proclamation.
*The “1 Camera, 2 Hours: How many plastic bags?,” a student led documentary campaign, is based on the original project by Cary Chapman, a student at Pleasantville High School. 1 Camera, 2 Hours (1C2H) aims to raise awareness about the pervasive environmental issue concerning single-use plastic bags, and encourage the use of REUSABLE SHOPPING BAGS. In just a few decades, single-use plastic bags have impacted land and marine life across the planet. We have received great interest in this student driven initiative from the community. Students who participated in this project spent two hours walking around their communities to count, record, and pick up all the single-use shopping bags they saw littering their neighborhoods. The displayed artwork is the visual representation of each student’s 2-hour journey.
The event takes place rain or shine.
