Free Museum Program: Historic Jewish Peekskill

Date/Time

Jul 14, 2019
02:00 PM until 03:00 PM

Description

The Peekskill Museum will hold a free program on Peekskill’s Jewish Community in the 1900s, which is the subject of a newly published book by the same name.

The program and book feature vintage photographs of the vibrant Jewish community that existed in Peekskill from the 1930’s through the 1970’s.  Pictures and stories of downtown Peekskill businesses, their owners, family members and area professionals from that era, including doctors, lawyers and judges, were collected from area residents past and present.

The idea for the book came from Dr. Bernard Yudowitz, a past member of First Hebrew, whose family owned the Cortlandt Cotton Store in Peekskill.  He worked in the store as a young boy, and recalled a tight-knit Jewish community among the many businesses in Peekskill.

John Curran, former Peekskill City Historian and current museum board member, will host the program, along with museum board member Robin Goldsand and her fellow First Hebrew Congregants Ted Ruback and Charles Newman, all of whom helped compile and edit the book.  The program takes place July 14 at 2 p.m. at the museum, 124 Union Av. In Peekskill. To contact the museum call 914-736-0473 and visit www.peekskillmuseum.org.

To order the book, contact First Hebrew at 914-739-0500, fhc@firsthebrew.org or visit www.firsthebrew.org.  First Hebrew Congregation is one of the oldest synagogues in Westchester, serving the Jewish and interfaith community for more than 125 years.
