The Sanctuary Series presents “Evolution” with pianist, Frederic Chiu. The performance will be on Sunday, April 15 at 4 pm in the Sanctuary of the South Salem Presbyterian Church with an artist reception to follow.
Frederic Chiu has been described as “a stunningly virtuosic pianist with a dynamic range that almost defies the capabilities of modern recording techniques...” - BBC Music Magazine, and praised for his intelligence and eloquence by the New York Times. He returns to the Series presenting a program which includes Bach, Chopin, Debussy and Prokofiev showing the evolving way that composers used the piano, from a singing instrument to a sound machine to a percussion box. He concludes with the breathtaking Liszt transcription of Beethoven’s 7th Symphony, part of a set considered among the most technically demanding piano music ever written, and labeled “the greatest works for the piano,” by Vladimir Horowitz. For Chiu, a Westport resident who performs internationally, this will be his only concert this season in the tri-state area.
The Series, dedicated to presenting extraordinary keyboard recitals in the historic hamlet of South Salem, concludes its fifth season with a special Mother’s Day performance by pianist Magdalena Baczewska on May 13 followed by a champagne reception for moms.
South Salem Presbyterian Church is at 111 Spring Street, South Salem, NY. Tickets begin at $25 for general admission in advance and can be purchased on the Series’ website www.thesanctuaryseries.org.
