Cloth & Memory: 4 Hudson Valley Artists Weave Memories into Fiber Art

Time is the warp and matter the weft of the woven texture of beauty in space…Annie Dillard

The Howland Cultural Center is pleased to host a reception for Cloth & Memory, a mixed media art exhibit, on January 13th, from 3:00-5:00pm, in Beacon, NY.

Four kindred spirits investigate how cloth retains, transmits, and resonates (with) memories. These artists include: Croton artist and exhibit curator, Mary McFerran; Red Hook artist, Mimi Czajka Graminski; Stanfordville artist, Riva Weinstein, and Dobbs Ferry artist, Harriet Cherry Cheney.

Whether devotional, emotional, or cathartic, these works intermingle sensory impressions, family lore, and historical artifacts with expression in collage, installation, performance art, and digital media. Each work challenges our perceptions of what it means to endure.

“Family heirlooms are a central element in my cloth assemblages,” says McFerran. She prints old photos and census reports onto fabric to create family narratives. Cheney “channels” her grandmother’s tales of her Ukrainian shtetl. Weinstein works with everyday materials to celebrate and contemplate life. Graminski embeds old dolls’ clothes into crocheted patterns.

The show runs from January 7th to January 27th. The Center’s hours are generally Friday through Monday, 1:00-5:00 pm.* The reception is planned to coincide with other arts events on Beacon’s Second Saturday. The artists will discuss Memory & Textiles in Art, Sunday, January 20th, 2:00 pm at the Center; this is also the snow date for the reception.
