Bedford Chamber Concerts: Flute & Harp

Date/Time

Nov 20, 2019
08:00 PM until 10:00 PM

Description

Bedford Chamber Concerts will Summon the Angels in Program Featuring Music for Harp and Flute.

The Wednesday November 20 Bedford Chamber Concert will present a transcendent program of Debussy and Mozart music for harp & flute, topped off by the first of Beethoven’s wonderful piano trios.  The soloists are the internationally recognized keyboardist Dr. Anthony Newman, with Emi Ferguson, principal flutist of the Handel and Haydn Society, as well as MET Opera harpist Susan Jolles.

Relax in the intimate setting and extraordinary acoustics of our music hall while listening to “Syrinx”, a piece by Claude Debussy and the first significant work for solo flute in 150 years.  Next, hear Debussy’s Sonata for Flute, Viola and Harp, the first noteworthy composition for these instruments which then became a standard for all chamber music ensembles.

After a scrumptious intermission of delicious food and drink, you will hear, the first of Beethoven’s three piano trios, “Opus 1”, which was his entry into the world of music publishing in 1795.  Well received, they made his name recognizable in music circles throughout his new home of Vienna.  In fact, the popularity of his trios was based not only on their musical value, but also on the popularity of the piano trio with amateur musicians.

Mozart’s 1778 “Concerto for Flute, Harp and Orchestra” was written under commission from the duc de Guînes, so he could play flute with his daughter, a harpist.  Unfortunately, the duke never paid Mozart for his work.  Mozart never wrote another piece of music for the harp as a solo instrument again.

The November 20th 8:00 concert is presented in St. Matthew’s Music Hall at 382 Cantitoe Street, Bedford. Tickets are $40 and may be reserved at (914) 522-5150 or purchased at bedfordchamberconcerts.org. Student tickets are $10. Intermission features an abundant assortment of free and refreshing food and drink.  At 5:30 on the day of the performance, there will be a free open rehearsal for all.
