FOR KIDS: ART & SCIENCE SUNDAYS ON THE SCIENCE BARGE 2013

Every Sunday, from July through October, the Science Barge on Yonkers' waterfront invites children ages 4-10 for hands-on Art & Science workshops. Children and adults can cross the gangplank and come aboard the Barge for everything from building take-home hydroponic mini-greenhouses to making Japanese fish sock-kites. And, back by popular demand are Blue Crab Blitz days. Learn all about the crabs that you catch with Science Barge Director Bob Walters. So get your sea legs ready and come aboard on Sundays from 2-4 pm.

The Science Barge is located at 99 Dock Street, Yonkers, NY  10701. Suggested $5 donation for supplies. Space and supplies limited, so please rsvp to Isr’a Abdo at Israabdo@icloud.com.  For more info, visit groundworkhv.org, or call 914-375-2151. Art & Science Sundays are sponsored by the Junior League of  Bronxville.

Here’s the full schedule for the Art & Science Sundays program:

7/21 Grow & Go Take-Home Garden & Watercolor Wax Painting
Family fun building hydroponic mini-greenhouses to tend at home and harvest for tasty, fresh salad greens. For added fun, participants can create intriguing underwater scenes from below the Hudson River in white wax, then paint them to reveal the images.

Discover the magic of making river water clear by testing different filtration materials in stages.

8/11 Creating Slithering Eel Puppets
Who loves the eel? We all do! Come learn about this mysterious creature that lives right here in the Hudson and Saw Mill rivers. Artist Isr’a Abdo will help participants create their own slithering eels with flexible materials and paint.

8/18 Grow & Go Take-Home Gardens & Blue Crab Blitz

Family fun building hydroponic mini-greenhouses to tend at home and harvest for tasty, fresh salad greens. Meanwhile, on the gang-plank, Captain Bob will lead the popular blue crab activities—pulling up the traps, examining the creatures within, and letting them swim away.

8/25 Blooming Pop-Up Plant Cups

Where does your garden grow? Right in your own pop-up plant cup. Using colorful India rice papers, participants will make a flower that literally blooms right in a cup!

9/1 Create & Launch Japanese Fish Sock Kites

Artist Isr’a Abdo will help participants create vibrant flying carp fish kites using rice paper and tie-dye, then launch them from the Barge and watch them soar.

9/8  Blue Crab Blitz
While catching blue claw crabs, learn how to tell a male from a female crab, a Jimmy from a Sally. What is a Sook crab, or a Sponge crab? What kind of food do crabs like to eat? How long do crabs live? What salinity do crabs prefer? Science Barge Captain Bob Walters will lead the way, helping to measure the catch, record the findings, and release the crabs back into the river.

9/15 Grow & Go Take-Home Gardens
