Is it cheaper and more energy-efficient to turn off the A/C

Q: Is it cheaper and more energy-efficient to turn off the A/C while you’re at work and then blast it on high when you return home, or to leave it on all day at a lower setting?

A: “It is always better to wait and turn the air-conditioner on when you get home,” says Alfonso Quiroz, a spokesman for Con Edison—even if that means running the A/C at full blast to cool down a hot house. “By doing so, you will be more energy-efficient and save money on your energy bills.” Con Edison offers a free programmable thermostat that allows its customers to control the temperature when they’re not there.
