Women’s Beauty + Wellness

As winter approaches, your natural inclination may be to curl up and hibernate through the season. But, that doesn’t mean neglecting taking care of your body. In fact, without the distraction of being lured outdoors while the weather is warm, winter can be an ideal time to rejuvenate and renew. Westchester health and beauty experts are ready to help.

Maintaining a healthy weight

Q. How do I avoid my usual winter weight gain?

“Here are 10 tips for enjoying the season without packing on pounds:

1. Eat before you party.
2. Bring a healthy dish.
3. Find healthy foods, such as fresh fruits and vegetables.
4. Exercise regularly.
5. Wear form-fitting clothes. (Without realizing it you’re more likely to overeat wearing loose clothing.)
6. Use small plates.
7. Practice portion control. Fill half of your plate with vegetables and the other half with proteins and healthy starches.
8. Avoid high caloric drinks.
9. Take a walk after parties or large dinners.
10. Resist constant grazing by socializing away from the central food location.”

Regaining a sensational smile

Q. How much damage do I have to do to my teeth to get porcelain veneers?

“Porcelain veneers are thin, high strength ceramic facings that are bonded permanently to the fronts of the teeth. Today's technology allows dentists to fabricate veneers that are as thin as 3/10s of a millimeter. This allows us to accomplish the desired effects of the veneers (improved color, shape, and position), with little or sometimes no preparation (drilling) done to the teeth.  Today, the emphasis is on leaving as much of the natural tooth under the veneers as possible. Sometimes crooked or crowded teeth can be moved with Invisalign prior to the veneers procedure, in order for the dentist to cut the teeth less for the project. To assure the best result is obtained, patients should seek out dentists with extra training in cosmetics, who are most likely to use these more up-to-date techniques. Patients can refer to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry at www.AACD.com to find the most qualified professionals in their area.”

Q. How can easy treatments with injectables make you look years younger?

“There are many simple and quick procedures with little or no downtime, that make you look brighter and healthier. One example is to combine fillers, such as Voluma, Restylane, Juvederm and/or Radiesse, with Botox, to fill wrinkles and folds while lifting and smoothing the face. We can eliminate dark circles under the eyes, enhance your lips, and soften those hated vertical lip lines. It's a perfect time to treat your neck area and make a sharper jawline. We offer the latest technology in lasers, skin tightening, and InstaLift sutures. You can have smoother, younger, brighter skin! Our office is happy to discuss and customize all procedures to fit your needs.”

Rejuvenating the skin

Q. What is the best way to care for your skin after an exceptionally hot summer?

“During the summer months our skin is exposed to the hot weather, build-up of sunscreen and sweat. All these factors take a toll on our overall appearance of our skin. These simple steps will help bring back that beautiful glow after the summer months. Cleanse daily, tone, serum, and moisturize. Exfoliate weekly to remove dead skin cells. Also, a mask can be very beneficial this time of year — it will help rejuvenate the skin. Drinking water and pre-booking those monthly facials all will work wonders!

Nurturing your hair

Q. What is the best daily hair-care routine?

1. First, know your hair type. Every person’s type of hair is unique, and it often needs to be treated and taken care of in a unique way.
2. Cleanse with shampoo and conditioner, when necessary. it's important to shampoo your hair because it helps clean your scalp. But, it’s important to avoid washing your hair with hot water.
3. A weekly moisturizing mask is important to maintain your hair at home. Between salon visits, you need to add nutrition back into the hair.
4. Use a wide-toothed comb when your hair is wet to avoid breakage.
5. Let your hair air dry.
6. Make sure your hair is trimmed regularly.
7. Avoid restyling your hair frequently.
