Brunch at the Southern Table Offers a Culinary Tour of the South
There isn’t a consensus on how brunch began.
Some insist that brunch started with the 19th century English high society habit of eating a big mid-day meal after a morning spent on horseback, hunting foxes.
Others say it was born out of the Catholic tradition of fasting through Sunday morning mass then sitting down for a big meal after the service.
What all can agree on, however, is how brunch got its name. The mash-up of “breakfast” and “lunch” first appeared in 1895 in an article titled, “Brunch: A Plea” in an 1895 issue of Britain’s Hunters Weekly magazine. The writer, Guy Beringer, says, “Brunch is cheerful, sociable and inciting. It puts you in a good temper, it makes you satisfied with yourself and your fellow beings, it sweeps away the worries and cobwebs of the week.”
Some things never change.
Brunch is served at the Southern Table on Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00am to 3:00pm, when diners can choose to sup on either the full dinner menu or the special brunch menu, both of which feature the absolute best of below-the-Mason-Dixon cuisine.
Southern Table’s brunch menu offers decadent dishes like Carolina Shrimp and Grits; Bacon, Eggs and Mac and Cheese served together; Crab Cake Benedict with bacon, avocado, asparagus and hollandaise sauce; and the “St. Dirty Nasty”–a plate piled high with cheddar biscuits, fried chicken, country sausage and sawmill gravy.
Sides of Hush Puppies, Slaw and Pickles; Corn Bread; Fried Green Tomatoes and Collard Greens are available on both menus, served with dinner menu items like Pulled Pork with Braised Red Cabbage and Mustard Sauce; Chicken and Dumplins; Smoked Ribs; Low Country Fish Stew; thick, juicy Pork Chops; and Fried Chicken & Waffles–an iconic Southern dish that started in Europe in the middle ages, migrated to the U.S.’ southern states, moved up to Harlem in time for the Renaissance, and finally headed back South again. That’s enough travel to work up an appetite!
