Q&A Topic: Beauty Game Changers
James R. Gordon, MD, PC, FACS, FAAO
Q: What beauty treatment do you think will be hot in 2018?
A: PDO Thread Lifting—a new spin on an old idea that is highly effective. A mini "facelift" can literally be achieved by utilizing a couple of threads placed beneath the skin and pulled back to retract the skin. The threads dissolve, and the face stays in the desired position for 1 to 2 years due to the unique collagen stimulation these threads provide. Patients walk out of the doctor’s office immediately feeling youthful and rejuvenated without any downtime.
Q: What is a quick and easy way to look beautiful?
A: Most patients want to enhance their natural appearance with minimal pain and downtime. Facial rejuvenation often begins with the injection of fillers or Botox. These procedures can be performed in a matter of minutes. Injectables typically yield quick results. "Tweeking"/further minor enhancements can be done a few weeks later to achieve the most perfect results. First-time patients considering such treatments may find it reassuring that these procedures are reversible—most fillers can be dissolved easily—should they not like their results.
Q: What are some of the new technologies used in aesthetics?
A: Advances in 3-D imagine now allow patients and doctors to look at potential results prior to treatment—before procedures are even performed. With the touch of a button, facial structure can be adjusted (i.e. lips augmented, eyelids raised, etc.). This tool helps patients and doctors strategize to achieve their desired results much more efficiently.
Q: What can lasers do for my face?
A: Lasers can be impressive tools in the armaments of physicians. Patients commonly experience improvements in skin texture, discoloration, wrinkles and elasticity following laser treatment. Each laser has strengths and weaknesses. Discuss options with your doctor to align expectations. In general: the longer the downtime, the greater the results.
Q: How should I select my doctor?
A: Many talented physicians can help you achieve your desired goals. Start by asking friends, family members or your primary care physician for referrals. You can also use the Internet (carefully!) to research and vet doctors. The most important step is your consultation with the doctor—you want to feel comfortable with him or her. Make sure the physician understands your objectives and goals and answers all your questions clearly. In general, it is good practice to seek at least one second opinion.
