3 Easy Ways to Get in on #GivingTuesday in Westchester

Hastings nonprofit Family-to-Family is encouraging Westchester to give back this holiday season.

In honor of #GivingTuesday, the social movement designed to balance the riotous spending of Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday with charitable works, one local nonprofit group is hoping to get Westchester in the holiday spirit.

Family-to-Family, a Hasting-on-Hudson poverty and hunger relief organization, has put together a smorgasbord of volunteer and donation opportunities for local residents this year, but here are some of our favorites:

Give it Up

Get your kids into the spirit of the season by asking them to “give up” one present they would otherwise receive themselves to a needier child. Take your kids shopping (you can even make a special trip out of it!) and set aside one present they would like to donate. Grab some wrapping and ribbon, but instead of wrapping it for yourself just send a quick email to Family-to-Family with your zip code and number of participating family members. They’ll then find a wonderful local organization you can work with to get that present into the hands of a family in need near you!

Give Hyper-Local

Alternatively, if you’re looking to keep things even more local this year, FTF is hosting their own book and toy drive that will allow parents from Hastings families in need to come select and wrap gifts for their own children from the generous donations of Westchester residents. Bring any new and unwrapped toys or books for kids and teens aged 3 to 18 and/or wrapping supplies to the Family-to-Family offices at 416 Warburton Ave. in Hastings. Drop-off is 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, now until December 10. Just text them ahead of time at 914.391.3220.

Adopt a Local Senior for the Holidays

Toys and games are nice, but we tend to forget that many of our older residents need some extra love this time of year as much as Westchester’s children. For those who don’t have any local family they can spend this time of year with, Family-to-Family is matching locals with residents of the Andrus on Hudson senior care facility, allowing you to give a gift and card to one of our county’s elders. For more info, email Family-to-Family.

The organization has a ton of other great ideas for giving back this season if the ones above don’t float your toy boat, and don’t feel compelled to only participate in the name of #GivingTuesday. You never need a timely hashtag to help others!
