04/29/08The Tribeca Film Festival
Unfortunately, just because the festival is close by, it doesn't mean that the productions are local. Only one film I saw had obvious local ties: Yonkers Joe. (See, we're right there in the title.) The film is about a dice hustler who tries to find the scam... Posted at 07:59 PM | Permalink | Comments: 0 |

04/22/08Judging Presidential Candidates on What Really Matters—Their Taste in Popular Culture
This week finally sees an end to the presidential primaries in Pennsylvania—hallelujah! With so much time, so many similarities between the candidates (at least on the Democrat side), and so little to do between primary contests, people have started complaining that the focus of the presidential campaigns has moved away from the real issues and towards more superficial matters. But while we're judging the candidates on inconsequential things, why not take a look at their tastes in popular culture? Posted at 07:59 PM | Permalink | Comments: 0 |

04/08/08A Documentary that Tackles the Tricky Subject of Race
With all of the news about Barack Obama's pastor and the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., race has been at the forefront of the national conversation recently. Yet few outlets in popular culture have stepped up to address the issue. One documentary, Meeting David Wilson set to air this week on MSNBC, is hoping to change that. 04/01/08Pleasantville's Andres Patrick Forero is In the HeightsRecently, I was talking with Laurie Yarnell, the features editor who sits in the next cubicle, about how much we both enjoyed In the Heights, a musical that recently opened on Broadway. The show is about the gentrifying area of Washington Heights, way up at the tip of Manhattan, and how the residents there struggle to make a living, find happiness, and support their families. I can easily get annoyed with how corny some musical soundtracks are, but the Latin-inspired music in In the Heights is something I could see myself listening to even after leaving the theater. The dancing and acting performances were, if at all possible, even more impressive. If you're looking to take in a Broadway... Posted at 07:59 PM | Permalink | Comments: 0 |
Associate Editor Marisa LaScala joined Westchester Magazine in 2003, and ever since she's blown every paycheck at the Greenburgh Multiplex. She also staunchly defends Richard Kelly, doesn't mind spoiling the endings of trashy movies you're curious about but don't want to pay to see, wishes the Hold Steady would come and rock out Westchester, misses Arrested Development more than anyone can imagine, and still watches cartoons and Saturday Night Live. You can find more of her cultural criticism at www.popmatters.com, where she is a staff writer.
