French Polish

It all started with a new home and a penchant for elegant French design. When the homeowners built their new house in Armonk, they outfitted it with refined high gloss coffered ceilings and trim; gracious shades of blue, taupe, and chocolate; and classic French furnishings and accessories. Then they called in Bilotta Kitchens.

“The homeowner was really great to work with. She has a great sense of style, knows what she wants, and was really involved in the process,” says Mel Elion, a senior designer with Bilotta's Mamaroneck showroom and the designer on this project, a 25 foot-by-30-foot kitchen.

Because the homeowner loved the green cabinetry in her previous home (also in Armonk), she was leaning toward cabinets in the same olive shade. But when Elion toured...

Traditional with a Twist

When the owners of this 1980s home in Mamaroneck opted to renovate their dated kitchen, it wasn't to go more modern, but more traditional. To bring the space into the 21st century yet give it a timeless quality that could go the distance, they turned to interior designer Linda Blair of Scarsdale-based Blair Interiors Group, who has a flair for adding just enough drama to classic designs that they appear firmly rooted yet utterly updated.

To open up the kitchen, Blair removed a wall to the adjacent family room, establishing a better flow. She swapped tired beige cabinets for lighter and brighter ones from the French Country Collection by Luxor, a line from St. Jerome Canada for which Blair is a dealer. The creamy color, Orchid, has a striated finish with a glaze. The look was...

Sweet Treat

What could be more delicious than a kitchen done up in creamy vanilla and rich chocolate? During a recent makeover, this Briarcliff Manor space got the royal treatment, with Heirloom cabinets finished in a vanilla paint with a chocolate glaze finish, striking countertops in Santa Cecelia granite and cherry wood, and state-of-the-art appliances.

When the couple bought this Cape Cod-style house, it sat on a prime piece of property abutting a nature preserve, but lacked a kitchen with style (sporting old beige laminate cabinets instead) or appropriate function for a family. Its small size and lack of storage were a problem. When they began their a second-story addition, the homeowners decided to move ahead with a long-planned kitchen re-do as well.

“We did a...

Ooh la la! Quelle cuisine!

For homeowners Chris and Julieanne Webb of Rye, a great kitchen had to be more than simply aesthetically pleasing, it also had to afford the ultimate in efficiency. The couple’s French Country kitchen, full of warmth and European flair (not to mention some pretty nifty appliances and amenities!) does just that.

Laura Sperandio, a designer with Bilotta Kitchen’s Mamaroneck showroom helped the homeowners find an equilibrium between the modern amenities and classic design that create the chic-yet-warm space that fits seamlessly into their classic-style home. “They wanted to bring their kitchen up to date without impeding on the Old World charm that their house invoked,” says Sperandio.

Chris, the proclaimed chef, masters the state-of-the-art...

Today’s Tradition

While the architecture of this Larchmont home is quite traditional, the homeowners’ taste leans toward contemporary. How does one bridge these two, seemingly disparate, design styles?

That was the challenge facing Kelly Stewart, CMKBD, a senior designer with Kitchens by Deane in Stamford, Connecticut, who opted for Premier’s traditional Biedermeier-style frameless cabinets with a cherry veneer and an ebonized bead, black granite countertops, and complementary black hardware to do the trick. A backsplash of natural stone tiles keeps the look from getting too formal.

“We took away Biedermeier’s detailed Egyptian influences, keeping its more modern clean lines,” Stewart...

From Blah to Beautiful

The owners of this Harrison house knew that white could be wonderful. They just wished that the vanilla kitchen they had inherited with their new home wasn’t so, well, bland. In the hopes of transforming their boring kitchen into a dazzling, functional space, they turned to Karen Williams, principal of Manhattan-based St. Charles of New York, who took an unworkable (and unremarkable) kitchen and swapped it for a stunning, supremely efficient space—all without expanding square footage.

A poor layout was to blame for the dance the kitchen’s occupants would do each morning in an attempt to grab breakfast, make lunch, and pack up homework. Williams began the renovation by removing the peninsula that landlocked...

Cream of the Crop

What do you do if you want a bigger kitchen but can't change the footprint of the house? Call Jason Landau of Amazing Spaces, LLC, a Briarcliff Manor-based kitchen and bath designer. His challenge was to open up the kitchen in this Briarcliff home, located in the Rosecliff community, without actually enlarging the space.

"The original kitchen layout was quite different," explains Landau. "Even though the former kitchen was the same size, the usable space was considerably smaller. The way we achieved this was to flip the layout."

This space swap was done by moving the sink area, previously was located under a window facing the yard, to make space for a sliding glass door to a new deck out back. The glass doors do double duty,...

Blue Streak

When Snaidero kitchen designers Lauren Fister and Stephen King were approached by a young couple to renovate the kitchen in their new contemporary home, they knew this project would be a fun one.

The couple, who with their two elementary-age sons recently had moved to Armonk from London, had a strong sense of design and an even stronger sense of what they wanted. The homeowners came to Fister and King with two mandates: a sleek, modern look and lots and lots of color. They had come to the right place: both are Snaidero hallmarks. “The couple favored a modern look, but didn’t want the kitchen to be cold,” says King, owner of the Greenwich and South Norwalk, Connecticut, kitchen...
