All About Value

After the onset of the Great Recession, how have kitchen appliance tastes changed?

The magic word is now VALUE. Curto’s Appliances has dealt with a myriad of clients in the last year, from small business owners, city policemen, newscasters to Wall Street executives, and they all sing the same song – having the biggest, best and most expensive on the block isn’t what’s important any longer. People want their dollars to travel far in terms of looks, performance and service. The winner in 2009 has clearly been the Electrolux brand which...

Kitchen of the Month Recap

Country or Contemporary…

From the moment Jaqueline Touby (JTD Designs) brought her client into the Kitchens By Deane showroom, Mollie Rhodes, Designer, knew that this was not going to be an ordinary kitchen. The request was for a country-contemporary kitchen. After some deliberation to determine exactly what style that may be, a vision began to emerge.

The exterior architecture of this...

A Dream Kitchen

This kitchen was custom designed and made by Guttilla Contracting. We introduced a two tone rich Honduras Mahogany with a cherry finish and a strirad paint color. All draws are dove tailed and are self closing, hand sanded and have industrial lacquer finishes: hand painted tiles, rich blue pearl granite with a custom edge complete this perfect kitchen design. Two (2) built in dishwashers, commercial grade stone and refrigerator...

Westchester Magazine’s DreamHome 2009

When thinking about the design of the DreamHome Kitchen, Bilotta designer Randy O’Kane “wanted to get away from the traditional white kitchen”. Instead, Randy took inspiration from the Arts and Crafts style of the house and combined this style with Asian accents. The features of the kitchen that recall the Arts and Crafts style include beveled inset cabinets with pyramid-shaped hardware. The bamboo stools and breakfast table definitely suggest an Asian feel. The SubZero refrigerator is hidden behind red panels with hand-painted gold stenciling. Metallic elements gleam throughout the kitchen, from the walls to the beautiful satin-finish pendant that hangs over the breakfast table. The kitchen island is a grand and wide...

Calm, Cool and Confidently Chic

Can a sleek, modern kitchen work in a brand-new Tudor-style home? The answer is perfectly plain—and perfectly gorgeous—in Amy and Brad Frisberg’s Scarsdale stunner.

When the couple bought their home in their new development, Scarsdale Manor—which was designed by Bedford-based architect Carol Kurth of the Office of Carol J.W. Kurth, AIA, and built by Fortune Homes—they loved the traditional exterior, but were hoping for a more contemporary, transitional interior. To create the just-right look in their kitchen, they called in Jeff Eakley, a senior designer in Bilotta’s Mamaroneck showroom, to show them the way.

“I love this kitchen—I’m happy it’s a look that’s gaining in popularity,” says Eakley. To...

Clean, Contemporary, and Oh-so Chic

“I can’t do formal,” says the owner of this chic, contemporary kitchen. “ I tend to make lots of dishes, sit guests around the table and tell them to help themselves.”

This was the defining rationale for this ultimate socializing kitchen, the heart of a busy home where family and friends will always receive a warm welcome in a light bright environment.

This was the catalyst behind the design of this stunning kitchen, created by Smallbone of Devizes. Walls were knocked down, small rooms were joined together and extended, and large windows were added to flood the new cooking/eating/living zones with natural light.

The client had decided on her kitchen cabinetry and its color even before briefing her architect on the structural...

Architectural Details Define A Classic Kitchen

While Alice Silverman’s clients downsized from a large home to a more modest one, their taste for great design did not. “The scope of this project included renovating every area,” explains Silverman, Allied Member ASID, of North Salem-based Creative Interiors. “Included were the great room, master bedroom, master bath, dressing room, powder room, home office, laundry room, hallways, and two guest bedrooms.”

Thinking ahead, the couple chose a ranch-style house that would provide easy living as they grew older. The couple wanted a kitchen that was formal and traditional, yet offered the spaciousness and livability they craved, all wrapped up in their favorite colors of soft greens, creams, and terracottas.

To achieve the look, Wood Mode...

dream come blue

Carol DeBear's mission: take a kitchen that’s a throwback to the ’80s and transform it into a modern functional space with an attached family room (complete with a desk area and work station) that’s timeless enough to stand the test of time. Step one was to divest the kitchen of the laminate, linoleum, and painted white brick wall. Then interior designer DeBear, owner of Scarsdale-based DeBear Designs, got to work.

Simple Shaker-style Cherry cabinets from Studio Marchand, state-of-the-art stainless-steel appliances, and dazzling countertops in Blue Pearl granite bring in contemporary yet classic materials that aren’t going to date anytime soon. The wall, heavy with years of whitewashing, was stripped down to its natural brick and serves as a classic...

room with a view

The gorgeous view overlooking Mamaroneck’s famed Winged Foot Gold Club can’t hold a candle to the stunning scene inside this breathtaking kitchen, exquisitely designed by Mark Brody of Kitchen Solutions in the Bronx. Polished black granite gleams atop endless Painted Signature's Custom Cabinetry with beaded inset Colonial-style doors. A large center island cleverly uses large posts to add visual interest. Enkebol carved corbels serve as brackets under a wood range hood and add character to the peninsula, which does double duty as a counter for seating. Wide-planked distressed oak flooring warms up the black and white shades used throughout the space.

Brody worked with the homeowners, Steve and Sue Joyce, on their kitchen while they were constructing their new...
