Summer Is Over! (So Look Out for These Great New Fall Openings.) Wining and Swining at Barcelona Wine Bar and First Wave Mexican at Mr. Taco
Blam! Labor Day Weekend slams down on summer like a safety gate. But the good news is that Westchester has returned from its vacations (and put away its bikinis); that means it’s time for serious eating and drinking. Here are the big fall openings of 2012.
New Rochelle Shocker! After 92 Years, Modern Pizza Expands (and Probably Moves); Sierra Nevada to Take Over Growlers; and Bolsas de Frutas at Paleteria Fernandez
I’m just going to put this out there. I think it’s really inconsiderate when restaurant people make big moves in August when the rest of us are trying to take vacations. Dishrags. That said, I was hanging out with an espresso at R Patisserie when I noticed that my second favorite restaurant supply store in the county was gone.
Epic Fail: A Restaurant Critic’s Top Five Service Disasters, August Fun at the Kittle House, and High Summer in a Sandwich at Scarsdale’s Cooked and Co.
We’ve come a long way, haven’t we? It feels like ages since we’ve seen the near ubiquity of the service style once aptly described as “squat and chat.”
First Taste: Shea Gallante Manages a Soft Opening at Ardsley’s Italian Kitchen (but We Still Snuck in and Guess What? It’s Killer!); Sauvignon Blanc around the World with Wine Geeks of Armonk; and The Cookery’s Tasso Ham
I’d like to use this space to air a complaint. Before this tarnished age of bloggers, Chowhounds, and Yelp helpers, restaurateurs debuted with something called a “soft opening.” There was a quiet, almost poignant, moment when they flipped their CLOSED sign to OPEN, and then waited with all the intense, silent hope of a proud new parent.
Burger Blitzed? The Best of Westchester Party, and Cod Help You—Staycationer Consolation in Chatham Cod at Grace's Table
Westchester, be honest: How many burgers can you eat? Smashburger, about to open in Mamaroneck, is betting that you can eat a lot. Smashburger (whose gimmick is that the cooks smash spheres of ground beef onto the grill—get it? Smashburger?) is joining the other new-wave burger franchises—Elevation Burger, Cheeburger Cheeburger, BGR, and Five Guys— in the burger carpet bombing of Westchester County.
