There’s nothing quite like food with that special homemade feel, and a new Thornwood restaurant is looking to bring smiles with exactly that. Freshly opened on August 29, Skratch occupies the former Burger Bistro & Bar location at the Rose Hill Shopping Center, maintaining the same contemporary rustic interior and flaunting the tagline, “Homemade Comfort Fare.”

This goal is brought to life through the diverse but minimal menu offerings, curated by chef Eric Vathke, formerly of The Tapp in Tarrytown, who co-owns Skratch alongside his fiancé, Angela Pizzolongo. Diners will be happy to find a wide range of ethnicities represented across the menu, from a succulent chicken schnitzel, to an aromatic pan-seared cod with a rosemary vinaigrette and a parpadelle bolognase, all of which utilize ingredients from local farms such as Hemlock Hill Farm in Cortlandt, Cabbage Hill Farm in Mount Kisco, and the Pleasantville farmers market.

Pizzolongo, who previously owned Garrison Market, says that among their offerings, her favorites are the chicken schnitzel and the strawberry spinach salad, however it’s the idea behind comfort food that really brings a smile to her face.

“Growing up I had very fond memories of my grandpa who loved to cook and who himself owned a luncheonette down in the city, and my memories are of every Sunday going there for dinner, and his spread of food was just amazing,” says Pizzolongo. “I grew up with that fresh homemade comfort food.”

Skratch is open from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday to Friday, to 10 p.m. Saturday, and Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m, as well as for special events and catering.
