Mount Vernon offers some of the county’s most diverse dining. Within the city’s 4 square miles, you’ll find Portuguese dishes, Cajun cuisine, New York-style pizza, buffet dining, Jamaican food, pub fare, soul-food favorites, Brazilian grilled meats, red-sauce Italian, and diners. From November 9 to November 17, you’ll also find affordable opportunities to try it all as the city launches Mount Vernon Restaurant Week.
Mayor Richard Thomas is the brains behind the event, which was inspired by meetings with local restaurant owners. “In Mount Vernon, with so many restaurants serving high-caliber international cuisine, food is elevated from a basic necessity to an art form,” says Thomas.
This is the first restaurant week here, and more than 20 eateries are participaing by offering special menus and deals. Peter VanCott of The Bayou says the 28-year-old institution is happy to be a part of the culinary event. “Dining out and enjoying good company is one of life’s greatest pleasures,” says VanCott, who hopes that restaurant week will encourage people to explore Mount Vernon’s “darn good eats.”
Jungle Restaurant co-owner and Mount Vernon native Tahirah Foxton agrees. Although the Caribbean restaurant is only a few monhts old, Foxton says the business is participating because she feels the event will be “epic and historic” for the city. “This is a a chance to meet and greet our community and share our passion for the culinary arts,” she adds.
