Dollar a Drink or Go Big Up Front: Tipping in Bars

Let’s call him “The Professional.” He was my first kitchen boss, my chef, and when I first started seriously going to bars in my 20s, it was often in his company. He was already an old hand at drinking, having started his career as a bartender in Manhattan—and this was in the bad old ‘70s, when a good tip was illegal powders offered off a burgundy, disco-length pinkie nail. Needless to say, I found his stories unbelievably glamorous because, when these events occurred, ATMs were science...

Westchester County Dining: Tipping at Restaurants

Westchester County Dining: Tipping at Restaurants

When I’m at a restaurant, I tip 20 percent on the whole bill, tax and drinks included, and it’s not because I’m grand, it’s because I feel that it’s the right thing to do. My husband (who has WASPier antecedents) finds my behavior repellent. “You’re grossly over-tipping,“ he says, as though he’s found me tucking twenties into waiters’ shirt pockets with a wink and a lingering pat on the bum. He takes 15 percent of the whole bill (tax included) and rounds up to the nearest dollar. In most cases, the difference between our tips is only a couple of bucks.

Turns out that we...

Hot and Sour Soup at Thomas’ Coffee & Tea in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY

Hot and Sour Soup at Thomas’ Coffee & Tea in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY

Guess what, kids! It’s catarrh time, when your heads and chests are beginning to fill with seasonal cooties. Oh, you won’t see the end of these colds until June or so, so you might as well relax and enjoy all of your favorite sick foods. While I’m a sucker for Jolo’s nutritive kale and ginger juices (cures what ails you), and the boiling hot jook sometimes available at Kang Suh (scalds so good), I also love the hot and sour soup available at Thomas’ Coffee...

Take-Out Thanksgiving: Westchester County Restaurants Offering Thanksgiving Dinner To-Go

Do you see the Tyranny of the Turkey at your local newsstand?  That means Thanksgiving is upon us. It also means you’ll be trashing your kitchen and manicure to provide, perhaps, a not-so-stellar meal. The good news is that a few great local chefs are offering take-out Thanksgivings; these full or partial feasts can take the stress-mess out of America’s biggest cooking holiday. I suggest  you use the extra free time to concentrate on the really important stuff, like an OTT, Sandra Lee style, Half-Baked...

Roasted Autumn Vegetables and Coach Farm Goat Cheese at Tarry Lodge in Port Chester, NY

Roasted Autumn Vegetables and Coach Farm Goat Cheese at Tarry Lodge in Port Chester, NY

Admitted. That October snowstorm was really uncool, especially for the thousands of residents who struggled along without power for, well, forever. But there are some things that we still love about autumn, including cozy dishes like this that unite roasted butternut squash, powerfully fragrant pumpkin oil, and crunchy pumpkin seeds. Take a bite of a tangy, goat-cheese crostini and mix it with the sweet, caramelized goodness of the roasted vegetables. It’s probably not as great as your first home shower in a week, but it’s good enough to draw a kindlier eye toward autumn.

Emma’s Ale House in White Plains, NY, Reopens!

In a series of events that sounds almost biblical, Emma’s Ale House was closed by a fire and then its reopening was delayed by a freak October snowstorm. Plague of boils be damned, Emma’s is now open for business. Come in and drink a toast to the vagaries of the weather.

Jean-Georges to Open at Inn at Pound Ridge; What Other Big-Name Restaurateurs and Chefs Should Come to Westchester County?

Okay, folks, I know that you’ve been dying to hear more about Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s Westchester venture, but, to be honest, that small, precise Alsatian is pretty hard to get on the phone. At this point, all we know is that his new restaurant will be housed in the former Inn at Pound Ridge, and that the space will be designed by Perry Street’s architect, Thomas Juul-Hansen. We also know that the new restaurant’s menu will be similar to the style of food being served at ABC Kitchen, which is Vongerichten’s...

HotFlash! Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten to Open in Pound Ridge!

Oh, there were rumblings that Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten would open in Westchester – and, to be honest, I’d been shamelessly pestering anyone I thought might give me the scoop. (Sorry, Andre – you know how it goes.) Turns out, I was right – Waccabuc resident Jean-Georges has taken the long empty Inn at Pound Ridge...
