9 Outdoor Happy Hours You Should Not Miss This Season

From Yonkers all the way up to Peekskill: All the booziest lawns and happiest hours to while away your early evenings.

You know the old saying: “It’s not summer until someone takes a lawn dart to the face.” Or something like that; we’re sure you have your own variation. The point is after all the groundhog shenanigans, the one true way to know the warm weather has arrived is to get out of work, throw your jacket aside, and knock back some refreshing adult beverages with your friends and coworkers in the crisp, cool air.

Yes, we’re talking outdoor happy hours. Westchester is filled with venues sporting decks, awnings, patios, rooftop lounges, and back-alley bocce tournaments. We thought we’d help give you a head start with a breakdown of some of our favorite al fresco imbibing locales.

Harper’s

Dobbs Ferry

Serene isn’t usually a word we associate with bars, but the back patio at Harper’s evokes a calm atmosphere no one seems particularly interested in upsetting. Aging stone walls draped in vines and soft lighting strung above that gradually replaces the setting sun lend this delightful space the air of a fairy garden, perfect for intimate evenings or just happily unwinding after a long day. Happy hour specials are available at the bar Monday through Friday from 5 to 7 p.m., and include $5 beer, $8 wines, and even snacks like oysters, mussels, and ribs. Combine that with weekly specials like $20 burger-and-beer on Mondays, half-priced wine bottles on Tuesdays, or no-corking-fee Wednesdays for a double-whammy.

Captain Lawrence Brewing Co.

Elmsford

If you’ve been aching to try the new menu at Captain Lawrence, now’s your best bet. It’s also the perfect time of year to enjoy all their outdoor space and games, and if you time it right, the perfect time to enjoy their beers: Brewery happy hour runs from 4 to 6 p.m. every Wednesday and gets you 16oz. drafts for only $4. Thirsty Thursdays even keeps happy hour running all the way until close at 10 p.m.!

Winston

Mount Kisco

Mount Kisco is chock-full of amazing eateries and drinkeries, but rooftop dining and some incredible menu items put Winston high at the top. Having happy hour every day they’re open (they’re closed on Mondays) certainly helps! Get 25 percent off bar snacks, $7 drafts, $8 select wines, and $10 specialty cocktails from 5 to 6 p.m., and enjoy the view!

Ossining

Happy hour runs weekdays from 4 to 7 p.m. in the bar area and includes $5 taps, $6 pinots, $8 flights, and even an “I Trust My Bartender” cocktail of the day, plus assorted bites to snack on. Grab your sustenance and enjoy the view out over the massive patio to the docks and water out back, or bite the bullet for full sit-down service at the beer garden and “sunset terrace.”

Birdsall House

Peekskill

Happy hours at Birdsall are a bit closer to “happy evenings,” as they run every weekday from noon until 7 p.m. Drafts from the house’s extensive beer menu are only $5, while a dynamite happy hour menu (priced just $4-$11) includes tantalizing options like the brisket nachos and grilled lamb sliders with a cherry mostardo we’ve still yet to perfectly replicate at home. Grab a bite, grab a beer, and enjoy your night behind the wrought iron of Birdsall’s gated patio.

River Outpost Brewing Co.

Peekskill

One of the newest additions to Peekskill’s waterfront scene, River Outpost is the on-premises brewing operation for The Factoria at Charles Point, headed up by Justin Sturges, previously the head of R&D for Captain Lawrence.  Enjoy breathtaking Hudson River sunsets along with happy hour specials like $4 drafts and 25 percent off food before 7 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays (and Wednesdays, come June!).

Village Beer Garden

Port Chester

A commuter’s dream, Village Beer Garden is literal steps off the Port Chester Metro-North platform. After a stressful day there is nothing better than “getting off at the wrong stop” and having to wait for the next train. The garden features an active fireplace for chilly nights, and the menu is exactly what you’d want from a traditional biergarten: wursts, sauerkraut, pretzels, and more. Truly, that hour between Northbound trains will be a happy one!

Portchester

When it comes to waterfront views, bartaco is hard to beat. And while they don’t offer “traditional” happy hour specials, they certainly have something special hidden up their sleeve. Fans of West Coast staple In-N-Out’s ‘secret menu’ options will be delighted to find a slice of that exclusivity here in Westchester with bartaco's secret taco. We’ll let that sink in. Secret. Taco. The taco in question changes every two to three months based on season and availability of ingredients, and must be asked for by name. The current #bartacosecret is a maitake mushroom and spring asparagus number for $3.50.

Freebird Kitchen & Bar

White Plains

“The only rooftop beer garden in White Plains” doesn’t disappoint. Look forward to views of the cityscape and clear blue skies this time of year, and a happy hour bar menu including $3 and $4 bottled beer; $5 drafts, house wine, and mixed drinks; and plenty of other drink options alongside $3 sliders and $6 bar bites. Happy hour runs Tuesday through Friday, from 4 to 7 p.m.
