Bigger is better at The Pizza Barn in Yonkers, home of the Super Slice, a 2-foot-long triangle of cheesy goodness. In its 43 years, The Pizza Barn has become a neighborhood institution, feeding the hungry pizza-obsessed masses with delicious slices and pies. It was one of the first (some claim the first) to offer delivery in the city.
Owners Angelo DeLuca and his mother Connie, treat their customers with warmth and attention, putting a homespun touch on each visit. Since introducing the Super Slice nearly a year ago, business has been especially booming. After filling up Facebook walls and food blogger sites, The Pizza Barn has been moving more than 1,000 slices a week, 300 of which are on Saturdays alone. With a pound of cheese per slice, that’s a lot of food moving out their doors. The staff, dressed in black “#superslice” T-shirts, field order after order, impressively keeping up with the steady foot traffic usually lined up out the door.
Of course, cooking up a slice of this size comes with its own set of challenges. The slice is too large to be cooked as part of a larger pie, meaning each one has to be made individually. To accomplish this, DeLuca uses special proprietary molds to ensure the crust is crispy and the slice isn’t soggy. Another challenge is just simply keeping up with the demand. Their Internet fame has brought them so many customers, it’s a challenge to make enough, yet they seemingly manage to keep the bulk of the customers quite satisfied. When asked about any future larger than life creation, DeLuca assured us that while he doesn’t want to give anything away, it will certainly be big.
