Feeding the family night after night is demanding – the planning, the shopping, and the chopping – not to mention the cooking! Figuring out how to pull it all together is especially challenging for busy parents who may often find themselves arriving home at the witching hour, greeted by little ones clamoring, “What’s for dinner?”
Larchmont resident Caren Weintraub, mom of two young children and founder of Simply Gather, knows all too well. She and her husband wanted to make the family dinner ritual a priority, but cooking from scratch every night was time-consuming. They started to look for ways to make regular home cooking more feasible without compromising their standards for eating local and organic produce.
And thus, Simply Gather was born. “We are a local company that is working to be part of the Westchester community to help make dinnertime a little easier for families in the area,” explains Weintraub. “What’s different about our service is that we design our recipes with both children and adults in mind. We try to find themes in meals that everyone will enjoy, like grain bowls, tacos, and pasta.” Each meal has optional ingredients and flavor components that can be incorporated and enjoyed by adventurous eaters or eliminated by pickier ones.
Meal-kit delivery services are ubiquitous these days. Companies like Blue Apron, Hello Fresh and Plated deliver nationally, touting farm-fresh ingredients and chef-inspired recipes. But when you need to feed kids with developing taste buds, a more sophisticated dinner menu may not unanimously fit the bill.
Simply Gather’s weekly menu features six different dishes to choose from, including seafood, poultry, beef, pasta/pizza, gluten-free and vegetarian options. Meals are balanced with nutrition in mind, like the grass-fed sliders with avocado salad, whole grain pasta with edamame pesto and string beans, or Malaysian turkey lettuce cups with spring bulgur. The fish tacos with black beans, avocado salad and cabbage slaw were exceptionally fresh and tasty – the multiple components allowed my family members to pick and choose what to put on their plate.
Another distinction of Simply Gather: they are working with lots of local purveyors, including fish from Port Chester Seafood, fresh mozzarella cheese from Cosmo & Alex Pisano Brothers in Mamaroneck and whole-wheat pizza dough from Gemelli’s in New Rochelle. The company will be sourcing from the New York tri-state area as farming season gears up.
By focusing on sourcing and delivering locally, Simply Gather is also able to minimize its carbon footprint. The company uses nearly 100 percent green packaging and re-uses its delivery totes and ice packs, reducing the amount of packaging that’s required and wasted.
Simply Gather may indeed have found a niche in the meal-kit delivery space by targeting local millennial moms and dads who care about food, community and sustainability. So, how does it work? You can order up to three meals a week for a few as two people or up to six. Orders must be placed by midnight each Tuesday for delivery the following week. Meals are $11 per person, and the minimum order is one meal for two people.
