Blockheads Outpaces Chipotle in White Plains
This Manhattan mini-chain offshoot has nothing to do with Charlie Brown and everything to with cheap margaritas and San Francisco-style Mexican food.

When Ken Sofer was considering opening an eighth Blockheads, his successful group of Manhattan-based festive cantinas serving San Fran-style Mexican cuisine, he didn’t consider another Big Apple location. “The rents in Manhattan have gone crazy so I searched outside the city,” Sofer explains. But on a weekday-scouting mission in White Plains, he saw something he liked. “I looked up and down Mamaroneck Avenue and saw a number of 25 to 35 year olds—our demographic.” Sofer also liked that he saw other New York brands like Brother Jimmy's on the strip.

Subsequently, April 18 saw the grand opening of the 65-seat Blockheads at 40 Mamaroneck Avenue, and it’s off to a busy start. “Our concept is not fast-casual like Chipotle, as we’re full service," explains Sofer, who grew up in the Bronx and Yonkers and partners in the business with his brother Don. "But we’re not fine dining either. [We] fall somewhere in between.”
The menu is inspired by the Mexican-American cuisine found in California, especially the San Francisco area. “It’s less unhealthy than much of the Mexican cuisine found in the states,” says Sofer. There’s almost no frying, no cooking with animal fats, and lots of steaming and grilling. A section of the menu has vegan options, including the Super Veganator burrito ($12.95) with vegan cheese, sautéed spinach, mushroom and pepper sauté, and multi-grain quinoa.
One of the biggest draws is the drinks menu, specifically the $3 margaritas and French Bulldogs (frozen margaritas with a float of tequila, beer, or Champagne).
