5 Ways to Eat Waffles for International Waffle Day

From straight-up classics to kind of crazy.

This Saturday, we’re celebrating waffles (apparently August 24 is also waffle day – we’re not complaining that we get to celebrate twice!). And while most of us grew up only eating waffles for breakfast, we’re happy to report that these crispy, dimpled treats are now served all day long. Here’s five different ways to enjoy them this weekend (and all year long).

Classic: Do as the Belgians do

In the battle for waffle supremacy, the Belgians come out on top every time. At Bread & Cocoa in Larchmont, owner Laurie VanderWoude’s yeasted light-and-crisp waffles don’t need anything except a sprinkling of powdered sugar (and maybe a cup of hot cocoa).

Crazy: With a Side of Bone Marrow

Only The Cookery would put waffles with bone marrow on its brunch menu. Crazy at it sounds, warm cornmeal waffles are kind of the perfect vehicle for rich marrow, sticky-sweet date compote, and crunchy hazelnuts.

Classic: Serve it up with Fried Chicken

The ultimate sweet-savory matchup, this Southern staple works for just about every meal. One of our favorite spots to try it: The Wooden Spoon in New Rochelle where the fried chicken is super crisp and perfectly seasoned.

Crazy: Waffle-Bun Burger

From lettuce wraps to ramen “buns,” you can put a burger between pretty much anything these days. At The Oath Craft Beer Sanctuary in Tarrytown, they’re serving up half-pound burgers topped with bacon and fried eggs, drizzled with maple syrup, and sandwiched between two waffles.

Both: As the Base for an Epic Ice Cream Sundae

You can’t even see the waffle in this sundae from New Rochelle’s Madison Kitchen (it’s hidden under the chocolate chip cookie), made with chocolate sauce, fresh whipped cream, and, of course, a scoop of Chef Nick Di Bona’s popular, housemade ice cream.
