New Rochelle Won Big at Our 2019 Burger & Beer Blast

NewRo restaurants took home gold in both the popular and Judges’ Choice votes, and that’s got to taste good.

Nearly 3,000 local food lovers swarmed Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla this year for one of Westchester’s most popular gastronomic contests: Westchester Magazine’s Burger & Beer Blast. Each one got to cast their vote for their favorite burger of the evening, choosing between more than thirty of the county’s best restaurants. Here’s how the evening shook out:

Judges’ Choice

For the first time this year, a Judges’ Choice category was added in addition to the popular vote. Our panel of food writers, editors, and celebrity judges weighed factors like flavor profile, consistency, and execution to pick what they thought was the best overall burger of the evening. The inaugural winner is…

North End Tavern

New Rochelle

A sweet chili glaze burger with spicy ranch and fried onions made this slider an instant favorite. Moist but with a nice sear, and a crunch from the fried onions were what put this burger over the top.

9. 808 Social

Scarsdale

The classic Social Burger is the flagship for a reason. This burger features cranberry-onion jam, spicy soppressata, and mozzarella, all wrapped in pizza dough and baked in a wood-burning oven.

8. (Tie) — North End Tavern

New Rochelle

Yes, the Judges’ Choice also broke the Top 10 in fan voting!

8. (Tie) — The Whitlock

Katonah

Maintaining their position in the Top 10, the team from The Whitlock brought back last year’s chorizo and shrimp burger, topped with jalapeño, lemon aioli, and fresh market greens.

7. 3 Westerly Bar and Grill

Ossining

The “Au Poivre Burger” — melted onions, sizzling blue cheese, and peppercorn aioli. Oh my.

6. X2O: Xaviars on the Hudson

Yonkers

Chef Peter Kelly makes a return visit to the leaderboards this year — X2O is the reigning champ for all-time total Burger Blast wins — with his signature Cowboy Burger, spotlighting cherry peppers and a jalapeño Jack cheese.

5. Southern Table Kitchen & Bar

Pleasantville

The relatively new Pleasantville joint went all-out this year, with a Hanger Steak Burger: prime hanger steak blend with homemade aioli, sautéed onion, aged white cheddar, lettuce, and a classic sesame seed bun.

4. Piper’s Kilt

Eastchester

Another perennial favorite, Piper’s Kilt went old-school with a classic backyard cheeseburger topped with sautéed onions and served with a dollop of ketchup on the side.

3. The Rye Roadhouse

One of the most creative and thematic burgers of the evening, Third Place went to The Rye Roadhouse’s Chicken Fried Burger. A ground beef slider fried in the vein of chicken-fried steak, this patty was then slathered in spicy Andouille sausage gravy and served on a warm country biscuit with a side of mac & cheese.

2. Coals Pizza

Portchester

The reigning champs two-years-running, Coals stuck with a classic style executed to perfection. Their all-beef burger was topped with rich smoked Gouda, shredded iceberg lettuce, bread-and-butter pickles, and a spicy aioli.

1. The Wooden Spoon

New Rochelle

Upsetting the potential Coals hat-trick, darkhorse contender The Wooden Spoon placed sixth last year but came out swinging with a breakfast-themed burger that shocked, awed, and frankly confused more than a few voters this year. The beef slider was served on a mini donut with bacon and jelly for a sweet-and-savory-and-salty treat that was in a world of its own. While it certainly wasn’t traditional, it was by far the crowd favorite.
