8 Places You Should Be Eating Ice Cream at Right Now

The Blue Pig

Pure ingredients like dairy from nonprofit collective Hudson Valley Fresh, in-season strawberries, fresh herbs, toasted nuts, Black Cow French-press coffee, and Madagascar vanilla-bean paste go into owner Lisa Moir’s stellar scoops. The flavors change often — you’ll have to come back on the regular — to feature seasonal flavors, plus ice cream sandwiches, and a variety of vegan options.

Fave Flavors: The “Really Good Chocolate,” made with Callebaut, is, well, really good. So is the honey-vanilla, garden mint chip (again with really good chocolate), roasted strawberry with basil, or anything that’s currently in season.


Penny Lick

While the name of Ellen Sledge’s retro pushcart turned brick-and-mortar ice cream parlor alludes to the past, the flavors at Penny Lick aren’t old school. Yes, creamy vanilla, chocolate malt, and Honey Graham are a nod to our sense of ice cream nostalgia, but there’s also Earl Grey, maple salted caramel, and chai latte, which are decidedly 2018. Also on the menu: a selection of signature push pops, plus gourmet versions of popular ice cream truck treats, like Fudgsicles.

Fave Flavors: Don’t skip the Ethiopian Macchiato, a coffee ice cream upgrade with a serious caffeine kick. Nonni’s Licorice redeems the candy’s bad rap, and, in fall, it’s all about the Drunken Pumpkin, spiked with Hudson Valley bourbon.


Bluebird

19 N Salem Rd, Cross River

It’s not just the rotating selection of small-batch ice creams — chocolate-hazelnut swirl, triple berry, coconut, and grasshopper — that keep us coming back to this under-the-radar, cash-only ice cream shop. We’re also here for the homemade taste-like-cookies waffle cones, hot fudge sauce, and expertly brewed Stumptown Coffee (getting an affogato wouldn’t be a bad idea).

Fave Flavors: That same Stumptown Coffee is what makes the creamy coffee ice cream so good here. Vegan and lactose-free flavors are typically available, as well.  


Ice Cream Factory

408 E Sandford Blvd, Mount Vernon

What started as a Mount Vernon Carvel franchise is now the only Westchester ice cream shop focusing on Caribbean flavors, including coconut, Jamaican rum raisin, and tangy-sweet soursop.

Fave Flavor: Try anything with Grape-Nuts in the name. The Post cereal is a popular ice cream ingredient in Jamaica — think of it like the island’s version of chocolate chips — and provides crunch to more than 10 flavors, including vanilla, strawberry, pistachio, and pumpkin.


Village Creamery

32 Broadway, Valhalla

There’s a lot of sweet temptation at this ice cream and candy shop. While we can’t say the same for some of the candies (sorry, Sour Patch Kids), the homemade ice cream is all natural, running the gamut from classic vanilla, salted caramel, and butter pecan to fun flavors like apple pie, I Want S’more, and bacon-studded Let’s Do Brunch.

Fave Flavors: Any version of chocolate-peanut butter is the way to go here, whether you’re keeping it simple with the PB-Nutella swirl, or going all-in with scoops of chocolate-brownie-peanut butter. 


Lighthouse Ice Cream Kompany

127 W Main St, Tarrytown 

There’s a lot to love about Lighthouse. First, there’s the prime location right off the RiverWalk. Then, there’s the new soda fountain, which churns out retro throwbacks like egg creams and ice cream floats. But, most importantly, we love the ice cream, made with organic dairy from Upstate New York’s Battenkill Valley Creamery. Oh and that errant K in Kompany? Turn the name into an acronym and you’ll see the genius: L-I-C-K.

Fave Flavors: The Vietnamese coffee has just the right mix of creaminess and caffeine without becoming overwhelming.


Longford’s

4 Elm Pl, Rye

Here’s the thing about Longford’s: You can find it a lot of places. Croton Creamery and Chappaqua’s Hall of Scoops, among others, fill their freezer cases with the company’s flavors, and local restaurants do their à la mode with the shop’s classic vanilla. Still, a visit to the Rye ice cream shop gives you the chance to try a wider range of flavors at the source. Did we mention they also make donut ice cream sandwiches?

Fave Flavors: Totally over-the-top Bear Tracks studded with praline pecans, Heath bar, fudgy brownie dough, and caramel; pink peppermint stick; and chocolate-flecked Coconut Mounds.


Main Street Sweets

38 Main St, Tarrytown

On Tarrytown’s picturesque main drag, this family-owned ice cream shop feels like the kind of place every town should have. The flavors rotate frequently, but we’re particularly fond of simple, old-fashioned options like vanilla fudge, sweet cream, cherry vanilla, toasted almond, peppermint stick, and “peachy peach.”

Fave Flavors: The Main Street Special is the signature combo, featuring coffee ice cream with a double dose of chocolate chunks and fudge.
