Burger Blitzed? The Best of Westchester Party, and Cod Help You—Staycationer Consolation in Chatham Cod at Grace's Table

Coming Soon: Carpet Bomb Burger!

Westchester, be honest: How many burgers can you eat? Smashburger, about to open in Mamaroneck, is betting that you can eat a lot. Smashburger (whose gimmick is that the cooks smash spheres of ground beef onto the grill—get it? Smashburger?) is joining the other new-wave burger franchises—Elevation Burger, Cheeburger Cheeburger, BGR, and  Five Guys— in the burger carpet bombing of Westchester County.

What I find so amazing is that this new crop of burger joints is being imposed on a dense (and firmly embedded) grid of McDonald’s outlets. Plus, there are also countless Westchester bars known for their burgers—the Piper’s Kilts, the YouNameIts of YourTown—where locals consume further patties. Where will it end?

Not surprisingly, this market saturation in burgers can be explained with one word: money. According to Daniel Magnus, CEO of Magnus, LLC (Area Developer for Westchester and Fairfield Counties Elevation Burger), “…the number-one consumed out-of-home food product is the hamburger. The number-two  product is the French fry.“  Plus, Westchester offers burger sellers a happy confluence of two charms—our wealth and population-density make Westchester a marketer’s dream.

Westchester, I’m curious: Have you changed your burger habits to accommodate these new-wave burger joints? Have you swapped out your Big Mac for Elevation’s organic patties? Have you forgone your occasional Piper’s Kilt trip for stops at your local Five Guys? Or have just made more room in your life for even more burgers? Let me know in the comments section below.

HotDate: Binging at the Best of Westchester Party

Here’s what you missed at the 2011 Best of Westchester Party. This year, it’s going to be bigger and better!

Where will you be on July 18? Well, 3,000 of Westchester’s party people will be gathered on historic Glen Island (a/k/a Party Island) for the county’s biggest summer blowout. The Best of Westchester Party will unite all of your favorite restaurants under one roof for one night only. Look for X20, The Cookery’s DoughNation Pizza Truck, Polpettina, Captain Lawrence Brewing Company, Lulu Cake Boutique, Bellota at 42, China White Noodle Bar, Don Coqui www.doncoqui.com, Emma’s Ale House, Coffee Labs Roasters, Moderne Barn, and Longford’s Own Made Ice Cream. Basically, arrive hungry.

And guess what else? During the festivities, sweet-toothed party people can bid in a silent auction to benefit the March of Dimes. Look for gift certificates from Beascakes Bakery, Frannie’s Goodie Shop, and Lulu Cake Boutique—bidding starts at just $12. You could go home with some cake in your future.

So, are you gonna get voted off Party Island? Hope not; click here for more info. Also, look for yourself on our Best of Westchester Facebook fanpage  in our post-event picture galleries. See you there!

HotPlate: Can’t Get to the Cape This week?  Try This Chatham Cod at Grace’s Table.

How depressing is it to be stuck at work when it seems that every other person on the planet is off on some sandy seaside vacation (hopefully getting a big, fat sunburn)? The good news is that you can console yourself with this vacation-evoking Chatham cod at Grace’s Table, the airy new White Plains spot is owned, in partnership, by Grace Balducci Doria, scion of the fabled Balducci family of Balducci’s market. Sure, you’re all pale and woefully free of sand, but this dish of milky cod with sprightly Romesco sauce will get you through at least a few more weeks.
