I’d like to use this space to air a complaint. Before this tarnished age of bloggers, Chowhounds, and Yelp helpers, restaurateurs debuted with something called a “soft opening.” There was a quiet, almost poignant, moment when they flipped their CLOSED sign to OPEN, and then waited with all the intense, silent hope of a proud new parent.

Westchester, be honest: How many burgers can you eat? Smashburger, about to open in Mamaroneck, is betting that you can eat a lot. Smashburger (whose gimmick is that the cooks smash spheres of ground beef onto the grill—get it? Smashburger?) is joining the other new-wave burger franchises—Elevation Burger, Cheeburger Cheeburger, BGR, and Five Guys— in the burger carpet bombing of Westchester County.
