New Caribbean Vibes at Forty North

The name and Hudson River views are the same, but new owners have transformed this former American restaurant into a mostly Caribbean one.

Food has the power to take you to faraway places, and you need not spend almost four hours in flight to head over to Forty North, a Caribbean restaurant in Hastings-on-Hudson.

The name may be familiar to some, and owner Melanie Williams kept it for a reason. “We’re off the beaten path. I thought if we kept the name, people would recognize it,” she says. “We’re hoping to change the former restaurant’s reputation around.”

Another remnant of the former restaurant is The Man Cave: a subtly lit bar room. There’s also a large patio with an excellent year-round view of the Hudson River that can be rented for events.

There’s dinner daily, including oxtails with rice and peas, fried whiting, tamarind-glazed grilled salmon, and plenty of plantains. Sunday brunch offers an eclectic buffet including jerk and curry chicken, fresh waffles, and escovitch.

The signature corn fritters with chipotle mayonnaise — dense cornmeal balls that are on the verge of sweet, are met with a lingering heat from the dip.

Because the restaurant is above a tennis club, soon there will be tennis-themed cocktails on the menu, and a snack bar run by Forty North for players and others looking for some refreshments after practice. Rorian McLean — or "Chef Ro" — is to thank for all the good eats. (I'm thinking about the heat of the jerk seasoning as I type this). She moved from Jamaica to the U.S. at age 19, and has honed her skills through catering, even owning her own restaurant at one point.
