This Mamaroneck Teacher Makes Delightfully Delicious Vegan and Allergen-Free Baked Goods

By day, Christina “Chrissy” Liptrot is a full-time seventh-grade teacher in Mamaroneck. But when school’s out, she’s baking around the clock to provide Westchester County with delicious, allergy-friendly baked goods.
Based in Mount Vernon, For Goodness Cakes NY is one of Westchester County’s only vegan bakeries, filling custom orders for pickup or delivery. “The comments I get are that you can’t taste the difference between vegan and non-vegan when you taste my stuff,” says Liptrot, whose decorative cakes and cupcakes are among her most sought-after creations.
Liptrot’s lifelong love of cooking blossomed into a passion in college, when she made treats to celebrate special occasions with her future husband. “The look on his face when he’d bite into them was so cute,” she recalls. “It was really encouraging. Every occasion, I’d try different things, and I started to build up a base of recipes.” After college, Liptrot learned she was lactose intolerant. “There weren’t a ton of options for me at that time,” she explains. “So I started to take all those recipes I had and make them into dairy-free desserts.”
Three years ago, during her summer off, her husband encouraged her to turn her talents into a business venture. She established a relationship with the Fleetwood Pastry Shop in Mount Vernon, where customers can now pick up their orders if they don’t opt for delivery, and rented space at Gramatan Bagel across the street to bake. Around the same time, the couple went vegan. “Something switched, where I couldn’t see the difference between my cats and the pigs and cows on TV,” she says. “So that’s how I became vegan, and then the business became vegan automatically.”
As a schoolteacher with dietary restrictions of her own, Liptrot is well aware of how hard it can be to find delicious treats. To meet that need, she creates baked goods that can accommodate any diet. “I do gluten-free, soy-free, nut-free, I’ve done corn-free,” she says with pride. She shares a favorite memory of an order from a mom whose child’s allergies severely restricted his diet. After working out a way to meet the order, Liptrot received a photo of the child enjoying a cupcake alongside his classmates, something he usually never got to do. “It’s nice to give that to somebody,” she says.
Liptrot intends to go full-time with the bakery this summer and to open a storefront of her own within a few years. In the meantime, you can order custom treats online for delivery or pickup.
