This bustling Irvington cafe has healthy brunch options for the whole family.

Black Cat Cafe’s unassuming set-up does little to convey the magic they have going on in the tiny kitchen in back. The small, counter-service restaurant manages to offer a large menu with a wide variety of simple breakfast, brunch and lunch items made from wholesome and often organic ingredients. In addition to breakfast burritos, omelets, French toast, quiche and a wide variety of wraps and sandwiches, they offer fresh squeezed juices and smoothies and gluten-free baked goods.
Owner Emily Feliciano thinks of her menu as “comfort food, elevated from the diner,” she says. “Real smoked bacon, real cheese... comfort food with great ingredients.”
The dishes are not the only thing that provides comfort; the prices do too. Not one item on the menu costs more than $11. Smoothies are $6 for 20 ounces and $6.50 for 24 ounces and juices just 50 cents more for each size.
You may have to stand to the side to wait for a table while the food is being prepared, but the friendly, relaxed atmosphere creates an environment where fellow diners make a point not to linger when they’ve finished their last morsel — and it’s rare to see an unclean plate there. During a weekend brunch visit, it is clear to see that their egg burritos and French toast are a crowd favorite.
Brunch is available all-day Sundays, during their open hours, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. They also serve breakfast 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. weekdays and 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays.

The spicy egg burrito, $8.80
A warm panini-pressed tortilla filled with fluffy egg, oozing pepper jack cheese, salsa verde and home fries - is just so perfectly rolled, pressed and spicy that if you can handle the moderate kick, it’s a must-try.
Knowing that eyes are bigger than stomachs, we almost didn’t get the quiche, but I am so glad it was added at the last minute. They always have a choice of two quiches. On the day of our visit, the choice was quiche Lorraine and mushroom artichoke. As a mushroom fan, I had to choose the latter. It was my favorite dish of everything we tried. The crust was warm and buttery and quiche cheesy, well mixed, the perfect temperature and definitely comforting. The other options they offer on rotation are goat cheese and herbs; spinach and tomato, and broccoli cheddar.
Juice, $6.50 for 20 ounces and $7 for 24 ounces
