Surf’s Up: Fortina Stamford Opens Pizza Surf Club On The Roof

The famed wood-fired Italian joint is partying on the rooftop daily with tiki drinks, creative snacks, and a chill atmosphere.

When Fortina’s Stamford location opened last year, we all heard about one of the building’s features, a rooftop. However, that rooftop never came together and coincidentally our inner party animals were tamed for the time being.

Until now.

Fortina’s rooftop has been open since April 17, 2016 and it’s called Pizza Surf Club, a concept within (or on top of) a concept and is separate from the restaurant below. The menu is different, the drinks are different, and the vibe is familiar Fortina with tropical décor, funky island tunes, and you might even catch a glimpse of Wayne’s World on the bar’s TV.

If you’re curious as to how Pizza Surf Club works, it’s pretty simple. You show up at noon (seven days per week, weather permitting), climb the stairs that follow the PSC graffiti, and you’re miraculously on the roof. Now it’s time to pick either a high-top or a bar stool to chill with your crew, forget about life’s drama, and get your boozing on with a tropical drink and some eclectic snacks.

Ordering requires Club tickets to be purchased. Similar to what happens at a dim sum restaurant, a pushcart will come around, and if you like what’s being offered, you can exchange a ticket for it. For liquid refreshment, simply hand a ticket to your bartender and order up.

If you hadn’t guessed by now, PSC is all about refreshing tiki bar drinks (just $8 each). Think along the lines of piña coladas, strawberry daiquiris, wine spritzers complete with a popsicle garnish, margaritas served in tacky plastic pineapple cups with a Coronita shoved in the ice, and that homemade Black Out Punch that’ll surely sneak up on you if you aren’t careful. If you’re too macho for that stuff they do offer other mixed drinks and beer in tallboy form. Advice: Don’t be too proud to sip on a fruity drink with an umbrella in it.

As far as the food is concerned you can expect to see things like tiny bags of Doritos served like a deconstructed taco with slow roasted pork, onion, cilantro, tomato, cheese, and crema. Other options are sausage sliders topped with creamy coleslaw on King’s Hawaiian sweet rolls, mini Sloppy Joes, and Kobe beef corn dogs surrounded by crispy shallots. I heard the menu will get switched up from time to time and soon enough, when PSC hits their stride, the menu will expand to include other items, and they just debuted Sicilian slices that you'll want to try, especially if you've had Fortina's pizza.

Pizza Surf Club is a fun time and concept for the area, and it’s an experience you’ll want to take part in after work, with friends and family, and to celebrate your next Sunday Funday.
