Rumor Mill: Lord & Taylor to buy Fortunoff

If you love the fancy jewelry and home furnishings at Fortunoff, be aware that things could soon change at the 180,000-square -oot White Plains outpost.

For the past couple of weeks, the rumor mill has been buzzing that Lord & Taylor owners, NRDC Equity Partners LLC, is close to buying the quasi-bankrupt Fortunoff to the tune of some $100 million. That money will be invested in existing and new Fortunoff stores. Although the deal is not expected to close until early March, the New York Times reports that if it happens, L&T will also sell Fortunoff merchandise in its 47 stores across the country and open a Fortunoff boutique within their Fifth Ave. flagship store.

Westchester’s Next Top Model

If you, like me, have been sucked into watching countless back-to-back episodes of America's Next Top Model on MTV, you might have what we’ll call model fever. Or, um, lack thereof. And if you ever sat through an episode thinking, “I could do that,” you’re in luck.

Lord & Taylor is having an open model casting call in their Eastchester store on Friday, February 15. The casting takes places from 10am-2pm, where 20 models will be chosen to participate in a contest to find the next face of L&T. On Sunday, the photos of the 20 chosen contestants will then be posted on their website, www.lordandtaylor.com/modelsearch, where the public can vote for their faves.

V-Day Validation

I might be in the minority here, but I actually like Valentines Day. I know, I know, why would I want to acknowledge the people I love only once a year? Why waste money on a Hallmark-produced holiday? Etc., etc. In that case, why bother with drinking beer on St. Patrick’s Day, eating Turkey on Thanksgiving or having a BBQ on Memorial Day? It’s all pretty much fabricated anyway, when you think about it. No one is telling you you HAVE to do any of it —you just do.

But, I digress.

Ahh, Valentine’s Day. The red and white and pink, the hanging out with friends or boyfriends. In my book, the best presents are the ones that actually mean something – not the I-stopped-by-the-gas-station-on-the-way home-and-picked- -up-a-dozen-roses. In...
