Have a great hair day while supporting youth substance-abuse recovery.
WHAT: Hernan Prada hair salon—a 2013 Best of Westchester winner for its balayage work (the hot-right-now coloring technique that’s a natural-looking alternative to ombré)—hosts a fundraising event, Balayage for Treatment, to help adolescents battle substance abuse, with 50 percent of every balayage service performed that day donated to the Hernan Prada Scholarship Fund, which helps teens pursue drug-related rehabilitative services at Pennsylvania-based Caron Treatment Centers.
WHEN: Thursday, November 7
WHERE: Hernan Prada salon in Scarsdale
WHY: A native of Buenos Aires, salon owner Hernan Prada began his career at 15, at a salon famed for working with Spain’s royal family as well as Salvador Dalí. From there, he moved to Barcelona, then New York, where he was a stylist at Bergdorf’s salon, before opening up his own business here in Westchester. A picture-perfect success story, right? Not exactly.
Prada’s real journey, as told on the page for his scholarship fund:
At 13, Hernan began experimenting with marijuana and, by age 15, was regularly drinking alcohol and using cocaine. Over the next 13 years, Hernan struggled with extreme addiction, which included trips to rehab and jail. In 2001, at the age of 28, Hernan joined a 12-Step program and began the road to recovery. After struggling for so long, he can now say it was the information and support he gained from the program that helped him and that it was the best thing that ever happened to him. He believes the key to recovery is to have access to the right information about addiction. It is Hernan's goal for today's adolescents to also be offered access to the best information to aid in recovery.
