On the Scene: the Best Swag from beautypress’ VIP Event

Editorial intern Claire Maurer reports on her findings at a recent beauty-industry press-preview event down in the City.

Beautypress, the international cosmetics PR network, hosted their Spotlight Press Event at Midtown Loft & Terrace on Fifth Avenue one week ago. As a student at Iona College, attending felt like I was a kid walking into a candy shop. The event featured skincare, hair, and makeup products from a variety of beauty brands, and I was able to sample several that would work well with my busy schedule and small budget (prices ranged from $10 to $150)—and that are great for nearly anyone with a hectic schedule.

While almost everything on display caught my eye, a few items jumped out and made me want to try them right then and there, and then again when I got home:

Argan Oil by DermOrganic

I love all natural products, since I don’t like to be weighed down in heavy creams or lotions. So if the fact that this oil is organic, vegan, and not tested on animals wasn’t enough, it hit the jackpot by being incredibly lightweight and able to be used on both skin and in hair. While the oil, which is part of DermOrganic’s anti-aging skin care kit, feels as if you are not wearing anything, the result is perfectly smooth skin and strands. ($36; look for it at Ulta in Port Chester or Target in White Plains and Mount Vernon.)

Curl Enhancing Mousse by Design Essentials

This mousse is a godsend to anyone who, like me, struggles with frizzy, wild curls, the kind that make people mistake you for Harry Potter’s Hermione Granger—or Jimi Hendrix. I put just a small amount in my hair after I showered and let it air dry. What usually looks like a tumbleweed was instead contained and frizz-free, and  lasted all day, even after walking (through various weather conditions) to class and work in New Rochelle, Larchmont, and Rye. This is an answer to my prayers, and it literally took seconds to apply. ($15.99; look for it at Sally Beauty in Yonkers and Hartsdale.)

Fake Bake 60 Minutes

I am the first to admit that I am skeptical of most self-tanning products; there is nothing worse than orange, streaky skin. But after seeing the results of Fake Bake 60 Minutes, I was assured I wouldn’t turn out looking like an Oompa Loompa. This fast-drying liquid contains no preservatives and claims not to clog pores or irritate sensitive skin, for a natural, sun-kissed glow in only an hour. As a student who can’t afford expensive tanning salons, this product is a solution I can use in the comfort of my dorm room. ($31.99; look for it at Ulta in Port Chester.)
