Sunny Mitchell


Sunny Mitchell, MD, has joined White Plains Hospital Physician Associates, a recently formed division of the hospital aligning local physicians with hospital services. She will hold the position of director of breast surgery for White Plains Hospital. Dr. Mitchell specializes in oncoplastic breast surgery, as well as nipple-sparing mastectomy.

HEINEKEN USA has appointed Matthew Kahn as vice president of marketing for portfolio brands. In his new role, Kahn will be responsible for leading the development and execution of brand strategy, media and public relations for Dos Equis, Newcastle Brown Ale, Amstel, and the recently acquired Strongbow Cider brand.

Marissa Coratti of Fishkill has been named to the newly created post of special events manager in the development department at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center. Prior to joining Phelps, Coratti was manager of special events for the Hudson Valley Region of the American Cancer Society, where she coordinated Relay for Life events in five counties.

AvalonBay Communities, a NYSE-listed real estate investment trust (REIT), has promoted Matthew B. Whalen to senior vice president for development. Whalen, who has been with AvalonBay since 2003, will continue to be responsible for acquisition and development on Long Island, adding Westchester County and Connecticut to his territory. 

United Hebrew of New Rochelle, a leading Westchester nursing home and short-term rehabilitation center, has named Maria Hood as director of admissions. She was formerly director of social work and discharge planning for White Plains Hospital Center.

County Executive Robert P. Astorino has promoted two of his deputies to the top positions in their respective departments. Dr. Kunjlata Ashar, the first deputy medical examiner who had been serving as acting medical examiner for more than two years, was appointed medical examiner and commissioner of labs and research. John McCaffrey was named chief information officer, heading the Department of Information Technology (DoIT), moving up from the department’s first deputy position.

 

NEW BUSINESSES, RELOCATIONS, OPERATIONS

In the first quarter of 2013, Montefiore Medical Center will transfer approximately 850 administrative positions from its corporate offices in Yonkers to the Kraft Foods beverages research and development center in Tarrytown. The move will follow the purchase of the 300,000-square-foot facility at 555 South Broadway. The purchase price has not been revealed.

Montefiore officials said additional jobs will be created in Yonkers at the teaching hospital’s existing offices in the South Westchester Executive Park. The Group, which operates ambulatory care centers in Yonkers, Larchmont, Eastchester, and Scarsdale, will not offer medical services at the Tarrytown location.

As of September 12, The Westchester Bank has exceeded $300 million in total assets. It is considered one of the fastest-growing local community banks in the nation.

Life Time Fitness (NYSE: LTM) is set to purchase of the 232,000-square-foot office/distribution building that was home to Gannett for 39 years at One Gannett Drive in Harrison. An operator of 105 health clubs throughout North America, Life Time Fitness plans to raze the building, which is situated on the 24-acre site, in order to build a state-of-the-art fitness facility, which will be one of the company’s largest.

Celebrity makeup artist Jay Alvear, who recently was named one of Westchester Magazine’s “People to Watch,” was chosen by leading Latin American designer Sergio Davila as key makeup artist for his Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2013 show.

The “Her Honor” mentoring program returns for a sixth consecutive year. Funded by Judge Judy Sheindlin and developed by Judge Sheindlin’s daughter Nicole Sheindlin, the program is administered by the Westchester County Office for Women, a division of the County Executive's Office. This year, the program has a new partner: The Mental Health Association of Westchester, reflecting the reality that emotional wellness contributes to success. The program matches promising young women from six local high schools with professional women who provide hands-on work experience, advice and guidance about succeeding in the workplace. These schools are: Mamaroneck High School, Mount Vernon High School, Thornton High School, Saunders High School Gorton High School, and White Plains High School.

The headquarters and main warehouse of Fresh Direct is moving from Queens to a new 500,000-square-foot facility in the South Bronx. Given its proximity to the county, the move is expected to positively impact the Westchester County job market.

AARP will designate Westchester County as one of the first seven “AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities” at the 21st annual Golden Harvest Breakfast Awards on October 4 at Abigail Kirsch at Tappan Hill in Tarrytown. The recognition is a tribute to Westchester’s Livable Communities initiative, whose goal is to enable seniors to age in their homes. The initiative is the signature project of the county’s Department of Senior Programs and Services (DSPS), which it developed with AARP and the Westchester Public/Private Partnership for Aging Services (WPPP).  

Hope’s Door, a local nonprofit organization providing safety and services to victims of domestic violence, celebrated the grand opening of its new satellite office, Hope’s Door Ossining, on September 13.

The Meet Me in Westchester campaign launched in June to help boost tourism as an economic driver in the local economy. At that time, Astorino announced that tourism in Westchester grew by 8 percent in 2011 to $1.7 billion, returning to pre-recession levels and supporting 24,000 jobs. The Meet Me in Westchester campaign will continue to build on that momentum through a mix of marketing, advertising, social media, and special promotions throughout the year.

Westchester County Executive Robert P. Astorino has announced that the Health Department will save approximately $2 million in rent over the next five years by relocating several health programs into county-owned buildings. Effective November 1, the Health Department will move to a single floor at 145 Huguenot Street in New Rochelle. The county had occupied 56,618 square feet on two floors since 1997, but will now reduce its tenancy to 28,309 square feet. The Health Department’s Divisions of Community Health, Disease Control, Children with Special Needs, and Public Health Information and Communications will remain at 145 Huguenot Street. Residents seeking help with obtaining health insurance also should also visit the New Rochelle office. The Environmental Health Division will maintain a presence in New Rochelle, but its main office has moved to Mount Kisco. Additional Environmental Health staff will also now be located in Peekskill.
