The annual release of Inc Magazine’s Inc 5000 List is a closely watched event in the entrepreneurial world. Making the list of the country’s fastest-growing privately held companies is an undeniable badge of honor—and validity. Companies such as Yelp, Pandora, Timberland, Dell, Domino’s Pizza, LinkedIn, Zillow, and many other well-known names gained early exposure as members of the Inc. 500|5000. The list also serves as a great trend indicator for the state of business; the companies on the list create a nice microcosm of the country’s overall business culture.
So what does this year’s list look like?
· The top five industries, indicated by total 2013 revenue of the companies in each industry sector, are: Health ($21.8 billion), IT Services ($19.3 billion), Business Products & Services ($18 billion), Energy ($17.5 billion), and Financial Services ($17.2 billion).
· The size of companies on the Inc 5000 is interesting as well. While companies of all sizes are included, the largest chunk fall squarely in small business territory, with 24 percent earning $2-$5 million, 23 percent in the $5- to $10-million range and 19.9 percent in the $10-$20 million bracket. By comparison, just .5 percent of business on the list earned $1000+ million.
· New York ranks as the metro area with the largest number of companies (399) included on the list. Washington DC was second, with 316.
