How to Build a Media Room (for Dummies)
Hoping to turn an unused space into your own private movie theater? Chuck Woodworth, of Valhalla’s AV Design Integration, tells us how.
When establishing a media room, there are three major things to consider, according to Woodworth:
What are the requirements for the entertainment system?
“Audio, video, streaming, and system controls are some of the main considerations,” Woodworth explains. Also, he says, it needs to be determined if the new system will be integrated with existing programs, such as Crestron, Savant, or Control 4. If the client does not have an existing integration program, Woodworth notes, they will determine if an integration program makes sense to control this system and environment. “And, we recommend our clients consider creating a budget for their project, which allows us to guide them through their choices for the new system,” he explains.
Where is the best place to build the room?
Woodworth notes that most clients already know exactly where they want the system but that AV Design Integration — as well as other top-level tech companies — will conduct a whole-house survey prior to installation to make sure all site conditions are considered and met when making the final determination for a site.
What equipment is necessary?
“There are literally hundreds of equipment choices available when considering a home-entertainment system,” says Woodworth. “Many of these choices are determined during the client interview and survey of the space. Once the equipment is selected, it is highly recommended that the equipment be supplied by the integrator [the person who installs the system]. This keeps the accountability for the operation of the equipment and the system in general with the integrator.”
Woodworth also recommends staying abreast of new innovations in contemporary media systems. “There are big advancem-ents in TV displays that are now starting to make 8K definition available,” he says. “Although there is no 8K content available at this time, some of these TVs are equ-ipped with an 8K up-scaling AI [artificial intelligence], which learns how to provide the very best up-scaling for a particular piece of content.”
