Kristina Benza, 27

When the new Tappan Zee Bridge is done, “every linear foot” of it will include components provided by County Fabricators, says company president and CEO Kristina Benza. Supplying structural steel and miscellaneous metals to civil-infrastructure projects, the Pleasantville-based firm has doubled its revenue every year since Benza took over. “Construction is in my blood,” she says of her somewhat atypical career. Her family owns a civil-construction company in Westchester and started County Fabricators as a small concern. Benza saw an opportunity to expand the business, taking the reins in 2013. County Fabricators has since supplied steel for every major civil-infrastructure project in the New York/New Jersey area, including the Goethals Bridge and various Metro-North projects. But Benza did not learn the business by osmosis. An award-winning STEM student with a graduate degree, she has long been developing skills vital to her current role. While her youth and gender often take construction veterans by surprise, Benza says, “Within five minutes of a conversation, they realize that I belong where I am.”
