Retail pharmacy behemoth CVS can trace its corporate origins to Westchester. The Melville Corporation, originally based in Rye, was a large retail holding company that was incorporated in 1922 as the Melville Shoe Corporation by Ward Melville. It acquired the fledging “Consumer Value Store” chain in 1969, after it added pharmacies to its portfolio. The company changed its name to the CVS Corporation in 1996 and divested all of its other retail holdings. In 2009, CVS opened its 7,000th CVS Pharmacy in Little Canada, Minnesota. Today, there are 44 CVS stores in Westchester.
