10 Tips for Getting Things Done Now

Why not accomplish goals more quickly and easily? It’s a great way to feel more successful, motivated and confident.  You won’t only impress your friends and family, but you’ll impress yourself with what you can accomplish.  Here are a few tips on how to start checking things off of your to-do list.

1. Map Out Large Jobs.  Break down your oversized tasks into smaller, more easily accomplishable steps.  You can even use a calendar and spread the tasks out, so you know that each day you are one step closer to your goal.  Visually mapping out your time and tasks also helps to prevent the feeling of being overwhelmed or that you won’t get it all done.  Then you can see, right there on paper that you will.

2.  Never Almost Finish Something.  Don’t stop if you are on a roll. Why not get this job out of the way, so you can move on to the next one?  Try not to multi-task if you can.  Focus and concentration can produce great results.

3.  Do Your Least Favorite Task First.  What leads you to procrastinate?  Do you find yourself always stalling to avoid a particular chore?  Doing your least pleasant tasks first ensures you will get to them, and cuts out the procrastination.

4.  Go with the Momentum.  Stay committed to projects where you are gaining a lot of ground.  If that starts to not work for you, switch your focus to something that feels fresh.  The idea is to work with and not against your habits and impulses with the results always in mind.

5.  Hold Yourself Accountable to Clearly Defined Tasks.  Schedule things earlier in the day and prioritize your daily goals.  Stay consistent and don’t skip time committed to your project.  The more defined the task, and the more time available to get it done, the better.  It will bring you one step closer to that satisfied feeling of achievement.

6.  Keep Everything Moving.  If you have too many projects going at once, then work in highly focused short bursts on each priority.  Say to yourself, “I will work on this for a half an hour and move on for today.”  Do that for each project you have running, each day, and soon you will see them all develop into successes.

7.  Write It All Down.  Take notes so you don’t have to start from scratch each time you approach a complex task.  These notes become great memory aids and help when coming back to something you haven't worked on in a while.  Notes also cut down on the mental cloudiness that can occur when you have a lot of projects going on at once.

8.  Think About Last Week, and Make Adjustments.  Reflective time pays off in spades. Figure out what you did right, and do more of it.  A little time spent on improving your methods can mean a lot more quickly completed projects down the road.

9.  Reward Yourself, but Push Yourself.  Balance keeps you going.  Tipping the scales toward too much work or too much relaxation will slow you down.  Your motivation and your physical energy are important when there’s a lot to get done - ASAP.  Keep your batteries charged and you will go further.

10. The Secret is, There is No Secret.  Regrettably, there is no silver bullet when you have a lot to do.  Hard work and applying yourself to the best of your ability will produce the best results.  There’s nothing like knowing that you didn’t hold anything back when working towards your goals.
